Gene Mutation Detection in Biliary Tract Cancer

Introduction

There are two subtype of Biliary Tract Cancer which are peripheral small duct type and perihilar large duct type. The categorization of the cancer into small duct or large duct is indirect indicator for genetic phenotype. However, the morphologic criteria of small and large duct type are subjective. Therefore, the goal of this study is to define more objective histologic criteria between small duct and large duct by the genetic reference. The patients with small duct-type cancer are highly associated with IDH1 or IDH2 gene mutation. On the other hand, those with large duct-type would have high association with KRAS gene mutation.

Our primary goal is to detect the gene mutation on the histopathology images by using deep learning approach. Second, after detecting the gene mutation, we are going to classify the histopathology images into small duct and large duct type tumor based on the gene mutation information.
